SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) — The presidential office of the Republic of Korea (ROK) said on Tuesday that it had not received official notification from Washington about U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to raise tariffs on some South Korean goods from 15 percent to 25 percent.
The statement said an inter-ministerial meeting would be held later in the day, and South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources Kim Jong-kwan, currently on an official visit to Canada, would soon visit the United States to discuss the issue with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
D. Trump said on Monday that he would raise tariffs on some South Korean goods from 15 to 25 percent, accusing South Korean lawmakers of delaying the adoption of a bilateral trade agreement with the United States.
According to the Renhap News Agency, following a meeting between South Korean and American leaders in Gyeongju last October, the United States agreed to reduce tariffs on South Korean products, including automobiles, in exchange for $350 billion in South Korean investment in the United States. On November 14, the two sides signed a joint memorandum, according to which the tariff reduction will apply from the first of the month in which the corresponding bill is submitted to the South Korean parliament to implement the agreement.
On November 26, the ruling Democratic Party of South Korea, Toburo, introduced a special bill on investments in the United States to the National Assembly (parliament), and on December 4, the United States retroactively reduced tariffs on South Korean cars to 15 percent. –0–
