NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday he would raise tariffs on some South Korean goods from 15 percent to 25 percent, accusing South Korean lawmakers of delaying a trade deal with the United States.
“Because the South Korean legislature has failed to pass our historic trade agreement, as is their prerogative, I am raising tariffs on automobiles, lumber, and pharmaceuticals, as well as all retaliatory tariffs, from 15 percent to 25 percent,” the American leader wrote on social media.
“The Republic of Korea’s legislature is not fulfilling the terms of its agreements with the United States,” Trump said. “On July 30, 2025, President Lee Jae-myung and I reached an agreement that was beneficial to both countries, and on October 29, 2025, during my visit to the country, we reaffirmed those terms.”
According to the agreement reached between Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung in October 2025, the United States will impose general tariffs of 15 percent on South Korean imports, 10 percentage points lower than the level initially announced by Trump. In return, South Korea agreed to invest $350 billion in the United States.
The Republic of Korea is a major trading partner for the United States. Over the past few years, the United States has imported over $100 billion worth of goods from the country.
The South Korean presidential administration said the country had not yet received official notification from Washington about the latest tariff hike, and that the country's trade minister would visit the United States to discuss the issue.
