Beijing, January 26 (Xinhua) — The development of a new type of forecasting system will be accelerated in 2026 to enhance the country's ability to predict and prevent extreme weather and climate events. This was announced at the National Meteorological Conference, which opened on Monday.

China Meteorological Administration Director Chen Zhenlin said the country will test a new disaster warning system, use artificial intelligence technology to improve the accuracy of typhoon and torrential rain forecasts, and develop new extreme weather forecasting products.

The head of the agency praised the country's efforts to combat extreme weather events last year. Specifically, Chen Zhenlin highlighted the provision of early flood season forecasts and the reduction in typhoon forecast errors. He also noted that meteorological services have strengthened cooperation with other government agencies to improve disaster preparedness and effectively manage resources.

In 2026, efforts will focus on accelerating the development of a new agricultural meteorological service system and implementing a comprehensive survey and zoning of agro-climatic resources, Chen Zhenlin added. -0-
