UNITED NATIONS, July 26 (Xinhua) — Representatives of Cambodia and Thailand addressed the United Nations Security Council on Friday over the ongoing border clashes, with Cambodia calling for an unconditional ceasefire and Thailand demanding the other side "stop hostile actions and resume dialogue."

Cambodia's permanent representative to the UN, Keo Chhea, has called for an immediate ceasefire with Thailand following border clashes between the two countries.

"Cambodia has demanded an immediate ceasefire – unconditionally, and we also call for a peaceful resolution of the /border/ dispute," a Cambodian diplomat told reporters after a closed UN Security Council meeting.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Friday afternoon at the request of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.

Thailand's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Cherdchai Chaiwaiweed told the UN Security Council on Friday that Thailand categorically rejects the use of force as a means of resolving international disputes and remains firmly committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with the UN Charter, the Foreign Ministry said.

He said Thailand had been actively engaging with Cambodia over the past two months through various bilateral mechanisms, but Cambodia had deliberately avoided meaningful dialogue and instead sought to internationalise the issue for its own political purposes.

"Thailand calls on Cambodia to immediately cease all hostile actions and acts of aggression and resume dialogue in good faith," the Thai diplomat said. -0-
