MEXICO CITY, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) — Gunmen opened fire on Sunday at an amateur soccer match in central Mexico, killing at least 11 people and wounding 12 others, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at around 5:20 pm local time /11:20 pm GMT on Sunday/ on a football pitch in the town of Loma de Flores in Salamanca, in the central state of Guanajuato.

According to eyewitnesses, several armed men arrived in two pickup trucks, got out of the vehicles and opened fire indiscriminately on players and spectators.

According to local authorities, 10 people died at the scene, and another died in the hospital. The injured were taken to nearby medical centers.

The Guanajuato state prosecutor's office said an investigation is underway.

As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been reported. Security forces, including state police, the National Guard, and the Mexican army, have launched a search operation for the attackers.

In recent years, Guanajuato has become one of the most dangerous states in Mexico, with much of the bloodshed linked to conflicts between organized crime groups.
