JERUSALEM, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) — The Israeli military said Sunday evening it had begun strikes on "several areas" in Lebanon, targeting what it said were the infrastructure of the militant group Hezbollah.

The strikes were carried out in response to alleged "repeated violations of ceasefire agreements" by the group, the military said, without providing details.

This is the second Israeli airstrike on southern Lebanon on Sunday. According to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency, two Hezbollah members were killed in the previous wave of strikes, and five others were injured in separate Israeli attacks.

In a statement following the first attack, the Israeli military said Muhammad al-Husseini, Hezbollah's artillery chief, was killed in the village of Arzun in southern Lebanon. Israel accuses al-Husseini of orchestrating numerous attacks against Israeli forces and attempting to "restore the group's artillery capabilities" in southern Lebanon.

Israel frequently launches strikes against Lebanon, claiming they are aimed at neutralizing "threats" from Hezbollah, even though a ceasefire brokered by the United States and France has been in effect between the two countries since November 27, 2024. The Lebanese government, along with many Arab countries, has condemned "continued ceasefire violations by Israel."
