YANGON, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) — The final stage of Myanmar's multi-party general democratic elections began on Sunday morning, with polling stations opening in about 60 towns.
Voting began at 6:00 AM local time. General elections in Myanmar are being held in three stages. The first stage took place on December 28 last year in 102 towns and villages, followed by the second stage on January 11 in 100 towns and villages.
Following the completion of the first two stages of voting, the lists of elected members to the Assembly of People's Representatives (lower house), the Assembly of Nationalities (upper house), and the state and regional parliaments were published successively.
Around 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties competed for seats in the listed bodies.
The elections will determine the elected members of the Assembly of the Union /parliament/, as well as the parliaments of the states and regions, and then the new Assembly of the Union will elect a new president, who will form a new government.
The last general elections in Myanmar were held in November 2020. –0–
