ABU DHABI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) — Russia and Ukraine held "direct contacts" during talks that concluded Saturday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but no specific agreements or joint statements were announced following the two-day meetings.

A UAE government spokesman said the talks involved "direct contacts" between the two sides and the atmosphere was "constructive and positive."

The meetings were attended by US Special Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Igor Kostyukov, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kirill Budanov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Ruslan Umerov, as well as other high-ranking officials from the Russian and Ukrainian sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on the social media platform X that military representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States participated in the negotiations, with the focus being on "possible parameters for ending the armed conflict."

Meanwhile, according to media reports, further trilateral talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States are likely to take place in the UAE next week.

The trilateral talks took place amid ongoing fighting in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials stated that Russian forces launched large-scale drone and missile strikes against several regions, including Kyiv, during the talks.

According to earlier UAE statements, the meeting is part of diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and explore possible political solutions to the Ukrainian crisis.

On January 23, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during a meeting with the heads of the participating delegations, stated that the country supports all efforts and initiatives aimed at achieving a settlement of the Ukrainian crisis for the benefit of all parties, as well as promoting peace and stability throughout the world. –0–
