Abu Dhabi, January 23 (Xinhua) — President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met on Friday with the heads of delegations participating in the trilateral talks between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine, which began later that day in Abu Dhabi, the UAE news agency (WAM) reported.
The UAE president expressed hope that the talks would lead to progress in ending the conflict and reaffirmed his country's commitment to supporting dialogue and diplomatic solutions, the news agency reported.
UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said in a statement that the talks would last two days, expressing hope that they would lead to “tangible steps towards ending the crisis, which has lasted nearly four years and is causing enormous humanitarian suffering.”
The current meeting is the first instance of trilateral talks since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022.
The talks are being attended by senior representatives of the three parties, including US Special Presidential Envoy Steven Witkoff and US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner; Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Igor Kostyukov; and senior Ukrainian officials, including Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov and Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin and representatives of Donald Trump held a multi-hour, all-night conversation in Moscow. The Kremlin described the talks as "constructive, extremely frank, and beneficial for both Russia and the United States."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that his meeting with Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland, was "productive and meaningful." –0–
