UN, January 23 (Xinhua) — China is concerned about the developments in northeastern Syria, which have led to a security threat, Sun Lei, Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, said on Thursday.
According to media reports, a group of Islamic State (IS) militants escaped from detention facilities in Hasakah province amid unrest. Sun Lei noted that China is also concerned about the management and security of facilities housing ISIS militants.
"China firmly opposes terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and emphasizes that any terrorist activity constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security and should never be tolerated," the diplomat said at an open meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Syria.
“We call on the Syrian transitional government to fulfill its international obligations and take all effective measures to decisively combat all international terrorist organizations designated as such by the UN Security Council, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement,” Sun Lei noted.
Sun Lei noted that the international community's expectations for Syria are generally aligned. He stated that the world hopes that Syria will steadily advance an inclusive political transition, resolutely combat terrorism, effectively protect minority rights, promptly restore its economy, and embark on a path to sustainable development.
China reaffirmed its support for Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity and opposes external interference, the diplomat said, adding that China expects to work with the international community to play a constructive role in helping Syria achieve security, stability and development.
