Moscow, January 22 (Xinhua) — Russia is ready to transfer $1 billion from assets frozen under the previous U.S. administration to the Peace Council. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this on Wednesday during a briefing with permanent members of the Russian Security Council.
"We have indeed received a personal invitation from US President Donald Trump to join the new international structure he is creating—the Peace Council," Putin noted. "Regarding our participation in the Peace Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry has been instructed to review the documents we received and consult with our strategic partners on this matter. Only then will we be able to respond to the invitation."
According to the Russian leader, the proposal made by the American side primarily concerns a settlement in the Middle East and the search for possible solutions to the pressing problems of the Palestinian people and the resolution of the acute humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
"The most important thing is that the entire process has a positive impact on a long-term settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on the relevant decisions of the United Nations," he emphasized, adding that the fundamental needs and wishes of the Palestinians must be taken into account. This concerns the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and its basic social infrastructure, healthcare systems, water supply, and the establishment of a reliable food supply.
“Therefore, even now, even before we decide on the issue of participation in the composition and work of the Peace Council, given Russia’s special relationship with the Palestinian people, we could, I think, send $1 billion to the Peace Council from Russian assets frozen under the previous US Administration,” the Russian president stated.
Vladimir Putin also indicated that the remaining funds from Russian assets frozen in the United States could be used to rebuild territories damaged by the fighting after a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine is concluded. "We are also discussing this possibility with representatives of the US Administration," he said.
