LONDON, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Wednesday he would not back down from his position on Greenland despite US President Donald Trump's threats to impose tariffs, and stressed that putting economic pressure on allies was "completely wrong."

During the weekly Prime Minister's Question Time in the House of Commons (the lower house of parliament), Starmer emphasized that the country will not compromise its principles by succumbing to threats. "I will not back down, the UK will not back down, from our values and principles on the future of Greenland," the British prime minister told MPs, adding that the government will continue "constructive" engagement but has already made its position "absolutely clear."

“He (D. Trump) said these words yesterday to put pressure on me and the UK regarding my values and principles regarding the future of Greenland,” Starmer noted. “He wants me to make concessions on my position, and I am not going to do that.”

The Prime Minister reiterated Britain's position amid mounting tensions with Washington and reiterated that the right to make any decision on Greenland's future "rests solely with the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark." –0–
