Adamuz, Spain, January 19 (Xinhua) — At least 39 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided near the southern Spanish city of Cordoba on Sunday, local media reported.

The incident occurred at around 7:45 pm local time / 6:45 pm GMT / when a train carrying 317 passengers from Malaga to Madrid derailed for unknown reasons near Amaduz, about 20 km from Cordoba, Spanish authorities said.

The derailed train collided with another high-speed train travelling on the opposite track from Madrid to Huelva, causing the second train to also derail.

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente called the incident "horrible," saying the last two carriages of a Malaga-Madrid train derailed and collided with the first two carriages of an oncoming train, knocking them off the tracks.
