Hohhot, January 18 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the factory explosion in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region remains at two, with two missing and 78 hospitalized, according to the latest official figures released Sunday.
The explosion occurred at around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday in the western part of Baotou City at a sheet rolling mill of Baogang United Steel.
As of 7:50 PM Sunday, local authorities reported two dead and two missing. Seventy-eight people were taken to hospitals, four of whom were seriously injured.
A large-scale rescue operation is currently underway. Forces from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Baotou City, and its Kundulun District have been mobilized. Police have dispatched over 170 personnel, over 70 vehicles, and five drones to the scene. More than 130 fire and rescue personnel are also involved.
The cause of the explosion, which caused significant tremors in the surrounding area, is still being investigated. –0–
