OSLO, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) — In direct response to new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, eight European countries targeted by the tariffs issued a joint statement on Sunday reaffirming their "full solidarity" with Denmark and Greenland and warning that the U.S. actions on Greenland could create the risk of a "dangerous downward spiral" in transatlantic relations.
The statement was jointly issued by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
The eight countries threatened with tariffs by Trump on Saturday emphasized their "commitment to defending their sovereignty" and their readiness for dialogue based on the principles of "sovereignty and territorial integrity." European states criticized the US tariff threats, noting that they "undermine transatlantic relations," and promised a "united and coordinated" response.
On January 17, D. Trump announced that, starting February 1, due to the situation around Greenland, the United States would introduce customs duties of 10 percent on all goods imported from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Finland.
As the American leader wrote on social media, starting June 1, the tariff rate will increase to 25 percent and will remain in effect until a deal is reached on the purchase of Greenland by the United States.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen controlling Greenland's defense and foreign policy. The island also hosts a US military base.
