UN, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) — Lasting peace is achieved not through a show of force or unilateral pressure, but through dialogue and diplomacy, Sun Lei, Chargé d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations, said on Friday.
Speaking at a high-level debate on conflict prevention and resolution marking the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter, he said the world was entering a new period of turbulence and transformation, with the international security situation becoming increasingly complex and violations of the principles enshrined in the UN Charter on the rise.
“In this context, I believe that today’s discussion provides us with a key platform to refresh our memory of our shared aspirations in founding the UN and to move forward together in the common interests of international peace and security,” the diplomat said.
Stressing the importance of upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Sun Lei said that the document sets the basic norms governing international relations and provides the basis for international peace and stability.
"One thing must be clear: the problems we face today arise not because the UN Charter is outdated, but because its principles are not fully respected," he emphasized, noting that these principles, such as sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs, and the peaceful settlement of disputes, remain crucial to the modern world. "They constitute the cornerstone of the international order and must be applied consistently, not selectively," Sun Lei added.
He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining a strong commitment to dialogue and consultation. "Countries must respect each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, take each other's legitimate security concerns seriously, and strengthen mutual strategic trust," Sun Lei said, calling on the international community to invest more in mediation, good offices, and preventive diplomacy, as well as to create favorable conditions for dialogue and cooperation.
Sun Lei also called for further efforts to ensure the UN can fulfill its responsibilities. The UN Security Council must act with unity and objectivity, ensuring the effective implementation of its resolutions, and UN member states must support strengthening the role of the Secretary-General in conflict resolution, he stated.
Sun Lei also highlighted the constructive role of the Global South and called for support for mechanisms such as BRICS and the SCO, as well as closer cooperation with regional organizations including the African Union, ASEAN, and the Arab League.
"China will continue to work with the international community to uphold the UN Charter, support the peaceful settlement of disputes, and make greater contributions to international peace and development," he said.
