UN, January 16 (Xinhua) — Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations Sun Lei called on the United States to abandon its fixation on the use of force against Iran at an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Thursday.
Recent events in Iran have attracted widespread attention, he noted. The US continues to make statements about the situation in Iran and openly threatens the Islamic Republic with force, resulting in war clouds gathering over the Middle East and tensions continuing to escalate, the diplomat stated.
"The use of force will never solve problems, but will only make them more complex and intractable. Any military adventurism will only push the region toward an unpredictable abyss," Sun Lei emphasized.
According to him, history has repeatedly proven that an obsession with force, relentless pressure, and unjustified interference only breed new conflicts and hatred. No country has the right to dictate the future of another, and any actions that violate international law are unacceptable, the diplomat added.
“We call on the international community to stand on the right side of history and on the side of justice, and to work tirelessly for peace and stability in the Middle East, as well as peace and tranquility throughout the world,” he said.
Sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs are fundamental principles of international law and the most fundamental norms regulating modern international relations, Sun Lei emphasized. Iran is an independent sovereign state whose affairs should be resolved by its people themselves, he stated.
China supports efforts to safeguard Iran's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity and calls on the international community to support the Iranian government and people in overcoming the current difficulties and maintaining national security and social stability, Sun Lei said. –0–
