Kyiv, January 15 (Xinhua) — Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada (VRU) appointed Mykhailo Fedorov as defense minister on Wednesday, parliamentarian Yaroslav Zheleznyak announced on his Telegram channel.

According to him, the corresponding decision was supported by 277 deputies, with the required minimum being 226 votes.

Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada before the vote on his appointment, 34-year-old M. Fedorov noted that his first order of business as Defense Minister would be to conduct a financial audit of the agency.

A day earlier, the Ukrainian parliament accepted the resignation of the previous Minister of Defense, Denys Shmyhal, and dismissed Mykola Fedorov from his post as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, at his own request.

On Wednesday, the Verkhovna Rada also appointed Dmytro Shmyhal as Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy. 248 deputies voted in favor of this decision.

The position of Minister of Energy has remained vacant since November of last year. –0–
