The ancient town of Lijiang is located in southwest China, in Yunnan Province. Lijiang is also known as Dayan Gucheng because its shape closely resembles that of a large inkwell. Lijiang is located on the banks of the Jinsha River, at the foot of the snow-capped Yulong Mountains. The town's elevation is 2,416 meters above sea level. Its total area is 3.8 square kilometers.

The ancient town of Lijiang was founded at the end of the Southern Song Dynasty and has a history of over 800 years. The overwhelming majority of the local population are of the Naxi ethnicity.

Lijiang is one of the ancient cities that has been well-preserved to this day, boasting numerous national cultural relics. The city is home to numerous historical monuments. In 1986, it was designated a Historic and Cultural City of China. On December 4, 1997, it was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming one of the first batch of Chinese cities to receive this status.
