HAIKOU, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) — South China's Hainan Province has recorded a record trading volume of 14.727 billion kWh of green electricity and green certificates in 2025, the provincial electricity trading center said Wednesday.
This figure was 9.9 times higher than the 2024 level of 1.488 billion kWh, which gave a powerful impetus to the green and low-carbon development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, the center noted.
In total, the volume of green electricity trade in Hainan Province in 2025 is equivalent to a reduction in standard coal equivalent consumption of approximately 5.89 million tons and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 14.68 million tons.
"Green" electricity is electricity produced with near-zero carbon dioxide emissions. It is primarily generated by solar, wind, or other renewable energy sources. "Green" certificates are the only proof of consumption of electricity generated by renewable energy sources, each equivalent to 1,000 kWh of "green" electricity.
Hainan Province, rich in wind and solar resources, is rapidly transforming into an island of clean energy and is improving its green electricity trading mechanism.
