London, January 14 (Xinhua) — Britain has begun withdrawing its personnel from the US military base in Qatar, Sky News reported on Wednesday.

The decision comes as tensions in the region rise after US President Donald Trump told protesters in Iran that "help is on the way" and warned of "very tough measures" against Iran.

Iran has repeatedly threatened to retaliate against American military installations in the Middle East in the event of a US strike. The US has also begun withdrawing some personnel from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military base in the region.

It is not yet clear whether all UK personnel will be withdrawn from the base.
