Tokyo, January 14 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi intends to provide more details on January 19 about her plan to dissolve the House of Representatives (the lower house of parliament) to hold early elections. Hirofumi Yoshimura, head of the Japan Renewal Society party, which forms part of the ruling coalition with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), told reporters on Wednesday after a meeting with the prime minister.
Sanae Takaichi informed senior members of the ruling coalition parties of her intention to dissolve the lower house in the first days of this year's regular parliamentary session and call snap elections, Hirofumi Yoshimura said.
If the lower house is dissolved shortly after the opening of the session on January 23, there are two possible schedules for holding early elections: one of which would see the election campaign start on January 27 and voting on February 8, while the other schedule would see the start on February 3 and the vote on February 15, respectively.
The expected snap elections will take place less than a year and a half after the previous ones. According to the Japanese Constitution, members of the House of Representatives serve four-year terms unless the chamber is dissolved early.
Sanae Takaichi's decision has drawn criticism from both within the LDP and opposition parties. Many argue that an early general election could delay the adoption of the 2026 budget, despite the Japanese prime minister's promises to prioritize policy measures such as price containment.
