Mexico City, January 14 (Xinhua) — Mexico will pursue a foreign policy based on equality and sovereignty, President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday, rejecting any form of subordination to other countries, including the United States.
At a morning press conference, K. Sheinbaum noted that Mexico and the United States coordinate their actions and cooperate on security issues, but it is also important for Mexicans to “remember our history and the meaning of independence and sovereignty.”
Regarding the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA), K. Sheinbaum expressed confidence that it will have a positive impact on the country.
"The process is moving forward, and it will benefit Mexicans," she said, acknowledging that there are issues that need to be addressed, such as the application of tariffs.
"We are a sovereign nation, and that is extremely important," the president noted after a phone call with her American counterpart, Donald Trump, on Monday. This is the eighth such conversation between the two leaders since November 2024.
The phone call took place amid tensions in trade, security, and drug trafficking. The Mexican government, however, insists that mutual respect and sovereignty are fundamental principles of its foreign policy.
