UN, January 13 /Xinhua/ — The United Nations is concerned about the escalating military rhetoric surrounding the situation in Iran, UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Tuesday.

“Of course, we are very concerned about the escalation of military rhetoric that we are seeing in the situation around Iran,” said S. Dujarric at a daily briefing, answering a question from a Xinhua news agency correspondent.

“All UN member states must promote diplomacy rather than military rhetoric,” he noted.

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had canceled "all meetings" with Iranian officials. A day earlier, he announced that any country doing business with Iran would pay a 25% tariff on all business with the United States.

Meanwhile, the New York Times reported on Monday that the Pentagon will present D. Trump with a “broader range of options for striking” Iran than previously reported.

That same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera that his country was prepared for war but remained open to dialogue. His statement followed Donald Trump's comments that the US military was considering "very tough options" against Iran.
