Washington, January 12 (Xinhua) — Diplomacy remains the preferred approach for the United States in its relations with Iran, but the Trump administration has not ruled out the use of military force if necessary, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said on Monday.

According to her, US President Donald Trump "has always emphasized that diplomacy is the first option." At the same time, she noted in an interview with Fox News, he "is not afraid to use the lethal force and might of the United States military if and when he deems it necessary."

"What President Trump will do next is known only to him, so the world can only wait and see. We will give him the opportunity to make that decision," said K. Levitt, declining to comment on any potential US actions or policy decisions regarding Iran.

The spokeswoman also said the US military "completely destroyed" Iran's nuclear program last year, calling it the Middle Eastern country's "main leverage."

On Sunday, Donald Trump announced that his administration was considering "some very tough options," including the possible use of military force against Iran. He said Tehran was "beginning" to cross the U.S.-established "red line."
