Gaza, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Gaza authorities announced Monday that the head of the Khan Younis police investigation department in the southern Gaza Strip was killed by unidentified gunmen.

In a press statement, authorities reported that 40-year-old Mahmoud al-Astal was shot dead in the al-Mawasi neighborhood. The statement added that, according to preliminary reports, the shooting was carried out from a car by several individuals accused of collaborating with Israel.

The statement explained that security forces have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to find the perpetrators.

The killing came after Hamas announced plans to disband the government bodies running the Gaza Strip and hand over their powers to an independent committee.
