BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — At the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will pay an official visit to China from Jan. 14 to 17, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Monday.

This will be the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to China in eight years, which the Chinese side attaches great importance to, Mao Ning noted at a regular departmental press conference.

According to her report, during the visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with M. Carney to outline a new strategic framework for further improving and developing Chinese-Canadian relations.

Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Li Qiang and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji will also hold separate talks and a meeting with him, during which they will conduct a comprehensive and in-depth exchange of views on issues of interstate relations and issues of mutual interest.

"Developing China-Canada relations in a healthy and stable direction serves the common interests of the two countries and their peoples, and contributes to world peace, stability, development and prosperity," Mao Ning said.

China hopes to use the upcoming visit of the Canadian Prime Minister as an opportunity to enhance dialogue and communication, strengthen political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation, properly resolve existing differences and address mutual concerns, and strengthen the momentum of improving China-Canada relations, so as to bring greater benefits to the peoples of the two countries, the Chinese diplomat concluded. -0-
