Maseru, January 11 (Xinhua) — China hopes to work with Lesotho to promote unity and self-empowerment among countries in the Global South, achieve joint modernization, and build a community with a shared future for humanity. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated this during talks with Lesotho Foreign Minister Lejone Mpotjoane on Saturday.

As Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, noted, China invariably adheres to the principle of equality of all countries, both large and small, in its diplomacy, and China-Lesotho relations are a prime example of this approach.

The Chinese diplomat stated that China views Lesotho as a strategic partner and intends to work with the Lesotho side to set a model of mutual respect, equal cooperation, and joint development for countries of different sizes.

Wang Yi noted that the Chinese Foreign Minister has chosen Africa as the destination of his first foreign visit of the new year for the 36th consecutive year. This convincingly demonstrates that China and Africa always stand shoulder to shoulder as brothers, firmly protecting the legitimate rights and interests of countries in the Global South, the Chinese Foreign Minister emphasized.

The world today, he continued, is experiencing profound changes and growing instability, and unilateralism, hegemonism and protectionism pose a serious threat to world peace and harm the interests of all countries, especially small and medium-sized ones.

Wang Yi pointed out that the four major global initiatives put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping are aimed at promoting prosperity through development, ensuring stability through security, strengthening trust through dialogue among civilizations, and achieving justice through improving global governance.

China highly appreciates Lesotho's firm commitment to the one-China principle, Wang Yi said, assuring that China will continue to support Lesotho in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security, rights and development interests.

He added that the two sides should further strengthen strategic mutual trust, expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges, effectively leverage the advantages of China's zero tariff policy, and deepen practical cooperation in various fields to promote the continuous progress of the China-Lesotho strategic partnership.

For his part, L. Mpotjoane stated that Lesotho views China as a reliable strategic partner and expressed sincere gratitude to China for its long-standing assistance and support. He noted that Lesotho highly values the important results achieved within the framework of the ten Partnership Action Programs to jointly advance the modernization of China and Africa.

The Minister reiterated Lesotho's firm commitment to the one-China principle, stressed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, strongly opposed any form of "Taiwan independence" and supported all efforts made by China to achieve national reunification.

According to L. Mpotjoane, Lesotho is ready to deepen cooperation with China in all areas and promote the construction of a Lesotho-China community of shared future at a high level.

He stressed that Lesotho supports President Xi Jinping's four major global initiatives and is willing to closely cooperate with China in international affairs to jointly uphold multilateralism and safeguard world peace and development.
