Maseru, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is visiting Lesotho, held a phone conversation with South African Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Ronald Lamola on Saturday, calling on both countries to uphold multilateralism and strengthen South-South cooperation.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, congratulated South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) party on its 114th founding anniversary, expressing confidence that through the ANC's efforts, the country will unite to resist external interference and achieve national development and upliftment.
According to Wang Yi, China is ready to maintain high-level contacts with South Africa, expand interparty communication, strengthen strategic mutual trust, and deepen practical cooperation. He emphasized that China will facilitate the implementation of China's zero-tariff measures for Africa in South Africa and support the country's economic development to benefit its people.
The Chinese Foreign Minister called on the parties to ensure the success of the Year of China-Africa Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges and strengthen public support for China-South Africa and China-Africa friendship.
South Africa successfully hosted the G20 summit last year despite external pressure, Wang Yi noted, congratulating the country on the achievement.
In today's unstable and uncertain world, China firmly supports South Africa in playing a more significant role in international affairs and is ready to work with South Africa and other countries in the Global South to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, resist the "law of the jungle" and hegemony, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries, Wang Yi emphasized.
R. Lamola, for his part, welcomed Wang Yi's visit to Africa this year and thanked China for its support of South Africa in hosting the G20 summit and for its assistance in the socio-economic development of African countries, including South Africa.
Reaffirming South Africa's strict adherence to the one-China principle, the South African minister stated that his country is ready to further strengthen political mutual trust with China, deepen practical cooperation, expand cultural and people-to-people exchanges, strengthen multilateral coordination, and promote the continuous progress of the South African-Chinese comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in the new era.
As R. Lamola noted, South Africa is ready to join China in upholding multilateralism, supporting the central role of the UN, and defending international fairness and justice.
The parties also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest. –0–
