Hangzhou, January 10 (Xinhua) — On Friday, the Russian cargo ship Okhotsk docked at Damaiyu Port, delivering 92.5 tons of live king crabs to Taizhou City in east China's Zhejiang Province. The port's border control office reported that the Okhotsk became the first foreign vessel to arrive in Taizhou in 2026 with live king crabs on board.
As a premium seafood product, king crab is very demanding of its environment and can only survive for a short time outside of it, according to border control officials, who explained that for this reason, the speed of customs clearance directly determines both its survival rate and market value.
The Port of Damaiyu, in collaboration with the port, businesses, customs, and maritime services, developed individual customs clearance plans for each vessel. A green corridor was also created to ensure vessels could complete all formalities immediately upon arrival.
For the Okhotsk, for example, the entire process—from mooring to customs clearance—took just 30 minutes, maintaining a crab survival rate of over 98 percent. And soon, they'll be appearing in markets and restaurants across China.
