WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the Greenland deal will be done "the easy way" or "the hard way."

"I'd like to do a deal the easy way, but if we can't do that, we'll do it the hard way," the US president told reporters at a White House event. He added that he's "going to do something about Greenland, whether they like it or not."

When asked about media reports that the White House is considering paying Greenlanders compensation for their agreement to join the United States, D. Trump replied: “I’m not talking about money for Greenland yet.”

According to American media, Danish Ambassador to the United States Jesper Møller Sørensen and the head of Greenland's mission in Washington, Jacob Ybosetsen, met with White House representatives on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the White House released a statement saying that "the use of U.S. military force" remains an option for Trump in connection with his demands on Greenland.

Both Greenland and Denmark have made it clear that the island is not for sale.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Monday that "if the US decides to launch a military strike against another NATO country, then everything will end, including NATO and therefore the security that has been established since the end of World War II."

Denmark is a member of NATO and the European Union. –0–
