DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, held talks with his Tanzanian counterpart Mahmood Thabit Kombo here on Friday, during which both sides reaffirmed their commitment to revitalizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA).
Wang Yi said that China values its traditional friendship with Tanzania and is willing to work with the new government of the country, guided by the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries, to continue the historical friendship, maintain a high level of mutual trust, firmly support each other, and deepen exchanges and cooperation.
He also emphasized the importance of implementing the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCAC) in Tanzania and promoting modernization processes in China and Tanzania for the greater benefit of the peoples of both countries.
Wang Yi noted that for 36 consecutive years, Chinese foreign ministers have chosen Africa for their first overseas visit at the beginning of the year, sending a clear signal to the world that China and Africa will always be together. Beijing is ready to pursue common development with Africa and jointly build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era, he added.
Wang Yi emphasized that TAZARA is a symbol of China-Africa friendship and a monument to bilateral cooperation, calling on both sides to jointly revitalize the railway and build a prosperity belt along it.
As countries in the Global South, China and Tanzania should join forces to uphold the central role of the UN in international affairs and the authority of international law, and firmly advocate multilateralism, Wang Yi said.
M. T. Kombo, in turn, highly appreciated China's long-standing selfless support and generous assistance to African countries, including Tanzania.
Tanzania adheres to the one-China principle, remains firmly committed to developing comprehensive strategic cooperation and partnership with China, and hopes to benefit more from China's zero-tariff policy for African countries, he said.
Tanzania supports the Belt and Road Initiative and the four major global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the minister emphasized. The country is ready to deepen cooperation with China within the framework of the FCAC and strengthen multilateral cooperation, he added.
