Addis Ababa, January 9 (Xinhua) — The continuity of China-Africa friendship, the stability of China's African policy, and the unity of developing countries are the reasons why Africa has remained the destination for the Chinese Foreign Minister's first overseas visit of the new year for 36 years, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during the 9th round of China-African Union (AU) Strategic Dialogue, which he co-chaired with AU Commission Chairman Mahmoud Ali Yusuf at the organization's headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital.
As the Chinese diplomat noted, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. Wang Yi recalled that the friendship between China and Africa was forged during their joint struggles for national independence and liberation, and then matured through the process of national development and economic construction on each side.
He said it was only natural that at the beginning of the new year, China would first visit its African brothers and sisters, just as it would visit relatives on New Year's.
The Chinese Foreign Minister pointed out that China's domestic and foreign policies maintain a high degree of stability, bringing much-needed confidence to the world, and this consistency extends to China's interactions with Africa.
He stressed that regardless of changes in the international and regional situation, China will always be the first to extend a helping hand when Africa needs it, and the first to stand by Africa's side when the African side needs to find partners for cooperation.
Noting that China and Africa belong to the Global South, share similar historical experiences and common aspirations, Wang Yi expressed confidence that, united in solidarity and aspiration, the 2.8 billion people of China and Africa will be able to overcome any difficulties and challenges, accelerate the pace of joint advancement along the path of modernization, and contribute to the creation of a more just, cooperative, harmonious, and stable world.
