HAIKOU, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) — Container throughput at Yangpu Port, the largest cargo port in the Hainan Free Trade Port (HFTP), increased by more than 65 percent year-on-year to 3.31 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, local authorities said.
In particular, the port's foreign trade container throughput reached nearly 1.09 million TEU, an increase of 113.66 percent compared to the 2024 figure, according to data from the Bureau of Transport, Ports, and Waterways of the Yangpu Economic Development Zone in Danzhou, Hainan Province, southern China.
Officials attributed the growth to accelerated modernization of port infrastructure, expansion of shipping routes and optimization of logistics services under policies related to the Hainan Free Trade Port, which is the world's largest by area.
Currently, Yangpu Port has opened 65 container shipping routes, including 35 international lines, gradually forming a network connecting global markets.
As Wu Xiongyue, a representative of this administration, noted, the port plans to increase the frequency of shipping services to countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East in the future, as well as provide a solid foundation for the high-quality development of port-based industries and the open architecture of the Hainan PST.
On December 18, 2025, China launched an independent customs operation regime throughout the Hainan Free Trade Zone, allowing for freer entry of foreign goods, expanded coverage of zero tariffs, and a more favorable business environment. This move is widely seen as a landmark step in China's ongoing efforts to promote free trade and greater high-level openness amid rising protectionism worldwide.
