SAN FRANCISCO, January 9 (Xinhua) — Two people were injured Thursday in a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Portland, Oregon, local authorities said.
Portland police said officers found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. Both were taken to the hospital; their conditions are unknown.
As a reminder, on Wednesday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, Minnesota, heightening public scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement. Thousands of people took to the streets in protest.
"Portland is now confronted with yet another deeply disturbing incident," said Portland Mayor Keith Wilson. The city cannot "stand idly by while constitutional protections are eroded and the bloodshed escalates," he added.
Portland is not a "training ground" for paramilitary agencies, the mayor emphasized, warning that threats of "full force" by the federal administration have deadly consequences. He called on ICE to cease all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.
