SHANGHAI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — Shanghai is accelerating the deep integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the manufacturing industry as part of efforts to strengthen the city's digital-enabled industrial ecosystem, the city's mayor's office said Thursday.
At a conference organized by the Shanghai Industrial Internet Association, a white paper on the application of AI in the manufacturing industry in Shanghai in 2025 was published, according to which the implementation of the “AI Manufacturing Industry” program in the city has yielded initial results thanks to government support and the active efforts of enterprises.
By the end of the first three quarters of 2025, Shanghai had 394 leading artificial intelligence enterprises. Their output value reached 435.5 billion yuan (approximately $62 billion), an increase of 39.6 percent year-on-year, while profits grew 11.4 percent to 40.78 billion yuan.
As of December 24, 2025, 139 AI models were registered in Shanghai, bringing the total number of AI specialists in the metropolis to nearly 300,000, accounting for approximately one-third of the total number in the country.
At the aforementioned conference, Zhang Ying, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Government, announced that Shanghai, in promoting the deep integration of AI and manufacturing, is actively mobilizing manufacturing organizations, universities, research institutes, and users to jointly develop industrial models, industrial intelligent agents, and intelligent equipment, supporting enterprises in carrying out intelligent transformation and upgrading, and exploring the application of humanoid robots in key production links.
Recently, eight Chinese departments, including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, jointly released the document “Considerations on the Implementation of the Special Campaign for Artificial Intelligence in the Manufacturing Industry,” according to which, by 2027, the country plans to promote the widespread application of 3-5 general-purpose AI models in the manufacturing industry, develop specialized AI models for specific industries, create 100 high-quality industrial datasets, and promote 500 typical application scenarios. -0-
