BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) — China's railway passenger traffic will reach nearly 4.59 billion by 2025, driven by the steady expansion and modernization of the rail transport system, according to official data.

The figure increased by 6.4 percent year-on-year, while annual freight volume exceeded 5.27 billion tonnes, up 2 percent from a year earlier, data released Thursday at the China Railway Supervision and Administration Working Conference showed.

Song Xiude, head of the State Railway Administration of the People's Republic of China, noted at a meeting that during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the total operational length of the country's railways increased to 165,000 km, and the length of high-speed railway lines exceeded 50,000 km.

According to him, key indicators, including passenger throughput, freight throughput, and freight traffic intensity, remain the highest in the world. He added that China continues to lead in railway technology for various conditions, such as high-speed, high-altitude, sub-zero conditions, and heavy-haul operations, emphasizing the rapid development of intelligent and environmentally friendly technologies.

“The constantly improving modern railway infrastructure system provides strong support for the high-quality socio-economic development of the country,” said Song Xiude. -0-
