BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Former China Eastern Airlines Chairman Liu Shaoyong has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) for serious violations of party discipline and laws, an official statement said Sunday.

A joint statement from the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission of the People's Republic of China stated that the decision regarding Liu Shaoyong was made recently following an investigation conducted by these two bodies with the approval of the CPC Central Committee.

Investigators found that Liu Shaoyong had lost his ideals and convictions, obstructed the investigation, and violated the eight guidelines of the CPC Central Committee for improving work style.

The statement also said Liu Shaoyong was accused of using his official position and influence to benefit relatives in business transactions such as managing private investment funds.

In addition, he was found to have used his official position to obtain benefits for others in matters such as project contracts, flight management and aircraft leasing, illegally receiving money and material assets in exchange on an especially large scale.

It was decided to expel Liu Shaoyong from the CPC, confiscate the material and monetary assets he had obtained through violating party discipline and the law, and transfer his case to the prosecutor's office for further investigation. -0-
