Moscow, December 30 /Xinhua/ — Russian Railways (RZD) will allocate 120 billion rubles (approximately $1.53 billion) from its investment program for the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed rail project in 2026, TASS reported, citing RZD.

The project to build Russia's first high-speed railway between Moscow and St. Petersburg is being implemented at the behest of Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of the national project "Efficient Transport System."

The approximately 700-kilometer railway will run through six regions of the country, home to 30 million people. Train speeds will reach 400 km/h. Annual passenger traffic between the cities is expected to increase to 23 million by 2030.

As previously reported, construction of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed railway began in March 2024. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028. –0–
