Vienna, December 29 (Xinhua) — Repairs to power lines have begun near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) as part of a local ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agency announced this on social media on Sunday.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed gratitude to Russia and Ukraine for agreeing to the temporary ceasefire, calling it a "window of silence" that will allow for the restoration of power transmission between the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant switchyards. These measures will help strengthen nuclear safety at the facility, he said.
The IAEA stated that its team is monitoring the repairs as part of ongoing efforts to prevent a nuclear accident during a military conflict. The agency estimates the repairs will take several days.
On December 15, power transmission between the Zaporizhzhia NPP and Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant switchgear via the autotransformer became impossible, significantly reducing the flexibility and resilience of the facility's electrical configuration. An investigation conducted by Zaporizhzhia NPP revealed damage to the power line between the autotransformer and the TPP switchgear, reportedly caused by military action.
