UNITED NATIONS, December 27 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack on a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs.

According to a statement released by the Secretary-General's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, the attack occurred during Friday prayers at the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab area of Homs.

A. Guterres reiterated that attacks on civilians and places of worship are unacceptable, noting that those responsible must be identified and held accountable, the statement said.

“The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity with all those affected, and wishes them a speedy and full recovery,” the document adds.

The death toll from the mosque explosion has risen to eight, according to Syrian health authorities.
