SEOUL, December 24 (Xinhua) — The Republic of Korea (ROK) recently conducted closed "defensive exercises near the Dokdo Islands (Japanese name Takeshima) in the Sea of Japan," prompting protests from Japan, the Renhap News Agency reported on Wednesday.

As the news agency noted, citing a source in the ROK Navy, the country conducts "territorial defense exercises in the Sea of Japan" annually and on a regular basis, with the latest exercises being largely similar to previous ones in terms of training methods and forces involved.

According to the report, these exercises were the second since Lee Jae-myung took office as President of the Republic of Korea. Similar exercises were previously held in July of this year.

Japan's Foreign Ministry said it had expressed strong protest over the exercises, reiterating its long-standing position on the so-called Takeshima Islands. –0–
