Islamabad, December 23 (Xinhua) — Five police officers were killed on Tuesday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police sources said.

The attackers opened fire on the car around 8:45 a.m. local time (03:45 GMT) in the Karak district, sources told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Police immediately returned fire, resulting in a shootout that lasted about an hour.

All five police officers in the vehicle were killed, sources said.

Before escaping, the militants set fire to a police car.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
