Beijing, December 20 (Xinhua) — China's draft environmental code calls for enhanced international exchanges and cooperation in marine environmental protection, deep-sea and polar exploration, and desertification control. The document will be submitted for third reading at the session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), which will be held in Beijing from December 22 to 27, Huang Haihua, spokesperson for the NPC Standing Committee on Legislation, announced at a press conference on Friday.

According to him, the draft brings additional clarity to the role of people's courts and the prosecutor's office in environmental protection, improves the system for monitoring environmental ratings, and contains additional provisions for their restoration.

The document clarifies management regulations regarding the open-air burning of straw, fallen leaves, and other materials, and strengthens controls over the interregional movement of solid waste.

In addition, the project provides for further strengthening of institutional measures for the development of a circular economy, and also improves the system of compensation for environmental damage, said Huang Haihua. -0-
