Rabat, December 16 (Xinhua) — At least 41 people died in Morocco on Sunday as a result of floods caused by heavy rains, local authorities said on Monday.
The death toll in Safi province, which faces the Atlantic Ocean, has risen to 37, with 14 injured people receiving treatment in hospitals.
Four people were killed in the southern province of Tinghir after their car was swept away by a powerful current, according to local news outlet Hibapress.
The flooding in Safi was reportedly caused by severe thunderstorms that lasted for about an hour. Dozens of homes and shops in the city of Safi were flooded, and cars were overturned or washed away by the floodwaters. Roads were also damaged, causing widespread traffic disruptions.
Moroccan authorities warned that more rain is expected in the coming days. On Monday, schools were closed in four provinces and large-scale emergency response operations were launched.
