Dushanbe, December 13 (Xinhua) — The first International Suzani Embroidery Festival was held in Penjikent, Tajikistan, on Saturday. The festival aims to promote traditional crafts, preserve intangible cultural heritage, and develop humanitarian exchanges.

The festival was timed to coincide with the official designation of Panjakent in October as a "World Crafts City" by the World Crafts Council for its traditional suzani embroidery. The event brought together over 200 folk art artisans and experts from various countries, including the Commonwealth of Independent States, the United States, India, Italy, and Turkey.

The event included exhibitions, a scientific conference, and a meeting between artisans and representatives of the International Folk Art Market.

Suzani is a traditional hand-woven decorative textile, primarily found in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Iran. The word "suzani" itself means "needle" in Tajik.
