UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Friday called on the March 23 Movement (M23) to immediately cease fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The current situation in eastern DRC remains tense, as escalating conflict and violence have led to a serious humanitarian crisis. An immediate end to hostilities is essential, Fu Cong stated in his address to the UN Security Council.
In recent days, M23 has launched a series of offensives and captured key towns like Uvira, leading to a sudden escalation of tensions on the ground. China is deeply concerned by these events and strongly condemns the violence committed by M23, Fu Cong noted.
China calls on the M23 to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2773 and relevant peace agreements, immediately cease hostilities, withdraw troops from Uvira and other towns, and stop expansion to prevent further spread of the conflict, the Chinese official said.
According to him, all parties to the conflict must comply with international humanitarian law, protect civilians, including foreign nationals, and lift all restrictions on access to critical infrastructure and humanitarian aid. The only solution to the conflict, Fu Cong emphasized, is a political settlement.
As a good friend of countries in the region, China remains committed to working with all parties to resolve the conflict and achieve development and stability in eastern DRC, Fu Cong said. –0–
