BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) — The first passengers and vehicles successfully crossed the China-Russia border river Heilongjiang (Amur) on Thursday on the new seasonal floating bridge Tongjiang-Nizhneleninskoye, marking the official launch of the ice-strengthening pontoon bridge for freight and passenger traffic for the 2025/2026 winter season.

According to local media, the floating bridge, which has been inspected by both China and Russia, consists of 23 pontoons with a total length of approximately 650 meters. Crossing it in one direction takes at least five minutes.

According to the preliminary bridge schedule, the first daily passenger bus will depart from the Tongjiang checkpoint toward Russia at 8:10 a.m. Beijing time. The frequency of the buses will be adjusted dynamically based on passenger traffic and other factors.

According to checkpoint staff, the launch of this temporary crossing is crucial for border trade and communication during the winter, when river navigation is closed. It will provide a stable, efficient, and affordable logistics link between China's Heilongjiang Province and the Jewish Autonomous Region of the Russian Federation, expediting the transport of goods and facilitating the movement of people.

It should be noted that the Tongjiang checkpoint is the only international border crossing in Heilongjiang Province that is simultaneously connected to Russia by water, road, and rail transport arteries, making it capable of operating year-round for cross-border passenger and freight transportation.
