Beijing, December 10 (Xinhua) — China strongly condemns and categorically opposes the UK's political manipulation under the pretext of protecting cybersecurity. China has already made stern representations to the UK in both Beijing and London, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Wednesday.
A Chinese diplomat made the remarks at a regular briefing for journalists, commenting on reports that the UK government on Tuesday announced sanctions against two China-based companies, accusing them of cyberattacks on the UK and its allies, as well as activities linked to the Chinese government.
China opposes hacker attacks and combats them in accordance with the law, Guo Jiakun emphasized. At the same time, he continued, China firmly opposes the spread of disinformation for political purposes.
Noting that China is the largest victim of cyberattacks, Guo Jiakun recalled that several months ago, the Chinese side released details of the case of how the US National Security Agency carried out cyberattacks and infiltrated China's National Time Service Center.
According to Guo Jiakun, the United Kingdom was one of the staging areas used by the United States to carry out the aforementioned cyberattacks. He added that China has already provided the UK with relevant information.
The UK and the US are members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance and NATO, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman recalled, expressing hope that the UK would explain its role in US cyberattacks on China's key information infrastructure.
The world faces common challenges in cybersecurity, Guo Jiakun noted. He called on the UK to immediately correct its mistakes, abandon double standards and attempts to politicize this issue, and work with China in a truly responsible and constructive manner to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in cyberspace.
