Moscow, December 9 (Xinhua) — The BRICS format and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) demonstrate a new model of global order, in which countries of the Global South are equal partners, rather than part of a periphery forced to obey rules not of their own making. This makes BRICS and the SCO very attractive to the majority of countries, according to Andrei Manoylo, professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).
"For the countries of the Global South, BRICS is a new model of world order, in which the countries of the Global South are equal members and partners, not part of the periphery, as in the Western-centric, post-unipolar world system led by the United States. BRICS are new international financial institutions… it is a non-Western majority that demands its share of participation in international processes from the Western minority," A. Manoylo said in an interview with Xinhua, summing up the outgoing year.
Assessing the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Moscow State University professor noted that "the SCO is now also entrusted with the important mission of global governance—a key factor in the new, just world order being formed by non-Western countries. The SCO's functions are expanding, making it an even more powerful international organization and a powerful instrument for transforming the worldview," A. Manoylo emphasized.
According to the expert, BRICS and the SCO play a vital role in developing South-South cooperation. For countries in the Global South, participation in BRICS and the SCO offers an opportunity to develop and strengthen ties with the world's largest economies—China, India, and Russia—which "collectively exceed the potential of Western countries combined and are significantly outpacing Western countries in terms of growth rates."
According to A. Manoylo, the outgoing year 2025 is important, among other things, because “the Global South has realized its power and has begun to concentrate its forces for decisive action.” –0–
